Why I recommend this book:
Simply titled Psalms, this profound study of “Hebrew Narrative and Poetry” highlights the wisdom and wonder of the prayer of the Church, the Liturgy of Hours, prayerful poetry that articulates the whole human experience of our longing for God. The book has energized my own monastic prayer life and has become for me a guideline for my journey toward the divine.
Konrad Schaefer, OSB, SSD, is a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, Oregon, who currently resides at Our Lady of Angels in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The study of each psalm underlines the human drama and imagery and depth therein and reveals in the process, a profound and vital relationship with the God who inspires each.
The theologian, the poet, the teacher, the biblical scholar, the individual simply looking to find a way to deepen their experience of daily monastic prayer will find a home in this book that can only be integrated slowly and carefully. Konrad Schaefer, while emphasizing for us the poetic elements and the historical context of each psalm, ultimately leads us into a world of lectio and contemplation where he himself is clearly at home until, like him, we ourselves learn a new and deeply tender love for the Psalms.
