Monks in Our Midst: Hildegard of Bingen on the Beauty and Necessity of Nature

In these summer months, there is much beauty as we look around at the fullness of the season. At the same time, there is increasing urgency to address the climate crisis and all the ways it threatens our shared home.

First, read and meditate upon these words from Benedictine Abbess and Doctor of the Church Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179):

“Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of earth’s greenings. Now, think. What delight God gives to humankind with all these things…All nature is at the disposal of humankind. We are to work with it. For without we cannot survive.”

Now read and meditate upon this article from Sister Joan Chittister, "There's a revolution needed. Join it." (National Catholic Reporter)

Reflect with us: How have you been able to celebrate “the beauty of earth’s greenings” this summer? Looking anew at the essential need for the earth, “for without it we cannot survive,” how does the natural beauty of earth call you to protect her? Does Sister Joan's article provoke you into any concrete actions?
