A Hymn and Prayer to the Theotokos [Mother of God]
--on the second day of the Feast of the Dormition/Assumption 2012

"Now the female sex is gladdened.
Now sorrow has ended.
Because Mary gave birth to joy,
the Savior and Lord,
Now the female sex is gladdened.
Now sorrow has ended.
Because Mary gave birth to joy,
the Savior and Lord,
Joy has blossomed.
We proclaim you, O Theotokos,
the throne of God's Word.
In human form sitting on the throne,
And showing you superior to the Cherubim,
God is seen by me.
By you, O Theotokos, is Eve, the first mother,
freed from condemnation.
Behold, now women are martyred for Christ.
As Thekla, virgin and first-martyr, exclaims,
'The female sex rejoices.'
Incline, All-Holy Virgin, your ear to me,
as I faithfully hymn you in words of praise.
And accepting, as the widow's gifts,
the hymns of my lips,
Pray for the forgiveness of my sins."
