Monasteries of the Heart

Give me a word Story 21

A handful of wheat grains were found in the tomb of the ancient Egyptian kings. The grains were five thousand years old. Someone planted the seeds and watered them. And, to the amazement of all, the grains came to life and sprouted. After five thousand years!

Discuss: Do you find this story hopeful or depressing? Explain.
Imagine a genie appeared to you and said, “I can give you one seed to plant that will eventually change something you really care about.” What seed would you ask for—a seed to end hunger? a seed to end racism? a seed to change the church? a seed to end your niece’s drug addiction? Where would you plant it? How would you water it?
